Hugh Frost has been sculpting wildlife and figures for over 16 years. Starting in pre school with clay, following that with his 1st bronze in late high school in the Cape Winelands. After graduating from Somerset College in 2008 he obtained qualifications in 3D animation and visual effects from The Animation School, then furthered his studies at The Open Window Institute by obtaining a degree in visual communication (Photography & Graphic Design). Followed by working in the film industry in Cape Town. He is currently residing on a small holding just outside Stellenbosch and has been a full time sculptor since mid 2022.

Hugh Frost focuses on creating realistic and highly detailed wildlife and figure sculptures. He is interested in portraying the nuances of each animal, capturing both their physical appearance and the emotions they convey. His use of fractured elements in his sculptures adds an element of contemporary art and unique expression to his work.

Influences & Philosophy
:

Hugh Frost is influenced by Nick Bibby with his realism. Dylan Lewis, because of his beautiful work regarding wild cats and how he portrays them. Stephen Rautenbach served as his teacher and mentor from 2006-2009 and has great admiration for how Stephens portrays his unique wildlife subject matter with texture, movement and story telling.

Other influences include eastern philosophy and literature including Yoga, Taoism and Buddhism. Anatomy, physical movement and conditioning of wildlife and the human body through space and time. Hugh Frost believes that art has the power to connect people to nature, and his sculptures are a testament to that. He places great importance on the concept of "wildness" and aims to bring the essence of nature back into our everyday lives through self discipline and constant perseverance. His sculptures are a celebration of the beauty of nature, the importance of biophilia, and he hopes to inspire others to protect and preserve our natural world - to be able to evolve in it.
